I’m guessing you’ve heard of KISS, no I’m not talking about that lovely act called kissing, I’m talking about the acronym.
According to Wikipedia KISS is an acronym for “Keep it simple, stupid” as a design principle noted by the U.S. Navy in 1960. The KISS principle states that most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than made complex; therefore simplicity should be a key goal in design and unnecessary complexity should be avoided. The phrase has been associated with aircraft engineer Kelly Johnson (1910–1990). The term “KISS principle” was in popular use by 1970. Variations on the phrase include “keep it stupid simple”, “keep it short and simple”, “keep it simple sir”, “keep it super simple”, “keep it simple or be stupid”, “keep it simple and stupid”, “keep it simple and straightforward” or “keep it simple and sincere.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KISS_principle
It was never Engineer Johnson’s intention to refer to anyone as stupid, not at all. As the lead aircraft engineer at Lockheed Skunk Works he encouraged his fellow engineers to make their designs and as a consequence their jet aircraft so simple that even the less technically endowed would be able to repair them with the simplest of tools.
I wonder where Kelly Johnson got his inspiration on simplicity from…..
The Simplicity of the Gospel
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God,
and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.
Romans 10:9-10 New Living Translation
We live in a highly complex, technically advanced ‘information age’. If you were not brought up in this ‘now’ generation you might find that as soon as you’ve finally mastered your latest smart phone people begin to look at you as if you’re weird when you bring it out. As far as they are concerned the phone is so hideously outdated it’s unbelievable.
Reading the above scriptures yesterday I felt totally refreshed at the simplicity of the gospel. Jesus couldn’t have made it easier for us. When we truly believe in our hearts in His Lordship and confess the same with our mouth we are saved. Simple!
So simple infact that we human beings try to complicate it just so that it will be palatable for our stomachs. Always happy to expend a little energy, as long as it’s someone else doing the expending, we insist on ‘works’. Don’t get me wrong I fully believe that an orange tree won’t bring forth sour grapes, if you are filled with the goodness of the Lord it will eventually show on the outside. Thing is, that is not the gospel. Simple faith is!
Jesus who is our wisdom from God, Wisdom personified (1 Corinthians 1:30) has made it simple, because He knows the power of simplicity. Smart is not synonymous with hard, difficult or strenuous its more about finding the easiest route to your desired outcome. Why walk up and then down the mountain with a weight equivalent to your years on your shoulders when you can off-load the weight on someone else and walk round the mountain on a tarred road?….think about it!
There’s enough complexity in our everyday lives, let’s not be stupid let’s keep things simple.
I’m rooting for you as a carrier of the simple message: Believe in Jesus and be Saved!
Drop me a line, LolaA 🙂
