THE SPOTLIGHT

Being pregnant is difficult enough, having a minute by minute review of your pregnancy by 7 billion Homo Sapiens and counting… is just, well let me say very difficult! Then to add ‘hyperemesis gravidarum’ which is, a severe, debilitating nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that generally leads to more than 5 percent weight loss and may require fluid and nutritional supplement. To add that to the list makes it extremely, very difficult!

Many of us would love to have our day on the red carpet, flashing lights and accolades, cheers, Facebook ‘likes’ and even get to ‘trend’ on Twitter. Maybe for a day or two and only the nice, comfortable and dignified things said about us.

The embarrassing, ‘don’t go there’ bits we like to keep to ourselves, i.e. we like to keep our privacy private.

So we probably don’t envy Kate Middleton at this very private (albeit made public moment) of her life. Please excuse my use of Middleton, but I’m not quite sure what that name has transformed into. She and husband, Prince William had envisioned making their announcement around the Christmas lunch table and a great cheer going forth. Unfortunately it was not to be, Kate had to see the doctor and now even in far flung Zimbabwe news of a royal birth in the pipeline momentarily takes their minds off their hardship. Not to be out done China has come up with new images to use as representation of the royal birth 2,000 years ago. You got it, a heavily pregnant Kate with her William as Joseph.

Talk about there being nothing new under the sun, 2,000 years ago there was no Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo or WordPress but there sure was gossip in the town centre and gossip they did in that town called Nazareth. Another young lady had the searchlight put on her and what it revealed wasn’t quite as expected according to the unofficial town crier. The chief gossip’s version was that:  “‘Nice girl’ Mary wasn’t so nice afterall, and that not only did butter melt in her mouth she had a whole lot of other things up her sleeve also. Somewhere along the line things had gone horribly wrong and now her stomach was showing the whole world the evidence of what she had done in secret. Rumour had it that Joseph had wanted to put her away quietly, but Mary’s father had threatened Joseph that he would annihilate his lineage from Nazareth. So he was standing by her till she gave birth and then they would put the child up for adoption. Meanwhile they had both been shipped off to Bethlehem by Mary’s father to reduce the tongue wagging.”

The chief ‘gossip listener’ however was having none of it, she’d learnt from another grapevine that Mary was the ‘chosen virgin’ and that what was inside her was conceived of the Holy Spirit. Never had there been so much roaring laughter in Nazareth’s town centre. “A virgin pregnant?” people exclaimed as they literally rolled on the floor laughing =)) ROTFL.

After Mary was visited by angel Gabriel her life never went back to ‘normal’. She was ecstatic having been chosen by the Lord to give birth to the only begotten Son of God, someone who was going to change the face of humanity forever and ever. He was going to be greater than the US president, greater than the Queen of England, infact greater than all heads of states put together. She didn’t completely understand all of it but she was just happy to be of service to the Lord.

But my, did she have a rude awakening when her stomach began to show. She had been wanting to tell Joseph for months but somehow couldn’t seem to find the right words, when the cat was finally out of the bag, he stormed out of the house promising never to return. And oh did the tongues wag all over the town, it seemed the whole town was against her, family, friends everyone deserted her, she had become the pariah. She constantly looked at her skin thinking she had become leprous as well she wasn’t sure.

Then one day, when she was about seven months gone Joseph showed up, he muttered something about a dream and that they were going to Bethlehem together and she should pack a bag.

A big smile 🙂 became fixed on Mary’s face, if it was only Joseph who believed in her in the whole of Nazareth that was enough for her. As she packed her bag she began to sing:

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour…”

The spotlight is great, but oh so very often it becomes a searchlight.

Being used of the Lord is like emitting the scent of roses, but please beware of the thorns.

Let me be the first to wish you a Merry CHRISTmas.
